《Songs from Hill and Land》源自藝術家楊斯云(Daisy Yang)往返尼泊爾將近十年的拍攝計畫,非一次性的任務或短期駐地,而是一段需要反覆回到現場、慢慢建立信任的過程。

《Songs from Hill and Land》是她在臺灣的第一次個展。

《Songs from Hill and Land》

Songs from Hill and Land is a portrait series that follows young, transnational working-class men in Nepal who migrate from rural regions to Kathmandu. Many come from socially marginalized communities and carry with them the weight of duty and social inheritance, shaped in part by the enduring legacy of the caste system. In the city they work on construction sites, expanding Kathmandu’s restless skyline, often with little more than their hands. While their labour helps build the nation’s urban future, their own aspirations remain fragile, constrained by structural inequality. The city offers them work, yet seldom a sense of belonging.

Within the project, these young workers are invited to step momentarily beyond their daily roles and inhabit imagined personas inspired by Bollywood and Nepali cinema, as well as the theatrical language of vintage studio portraiture. Staged within their actual work environments, the photographs are created in collaboration with the men themselves. Together they construct fictional characters that echo something deeper: aspirations, emotions, and inner identities rarely visible in everyday life. The portraits open a space for performance, play, and self-imagination.Alongside these staged images, the men’s social-media photographs, often filtered and stylized, as well as rare family photos, are collected and juxtaposed to reveal layered expressions of desire and selfhood.

Rather than attempting to shed the identity of labour, a role often passed down throughgenerations, the project seeks to reveal the individuality that persists within systems that tend to
flatten it. Across the images, these men negotiate masculinity in ways that are both inherited andimprovised, shaped by social expectation yet quietly reimagined.

Ultimately, Songs from Hill and Land invites viewers to move beyond dominant Western frameworks of masculinity and encounter other expressions of manhood. Here masculinity is
shaped by labour, migration, cultural fantasy, and the enduring desire to become someone else, if only for a moment.
